Data Base Administration

These services are related to MS SQL Server 2000 and greater. All business systems are rooted in storing data in a database system. This would make the database one of the most important business systems in the enterprise. Too often, companies take for granted the operation and maintenance of the system because of the way it sits almost hidden behind the front end interfaces. The DBA Services will ensure an efficient data protection plan is implemented. Protection of the database must be commensurate with the information stored within it.

CREATE OF A SOLID BACKUP PLAN
We will work with you to determine optimal times for backup of your data and best usage of the various types of backups. Determine data loss tolerance and acceptability levels and customize backup plans to accommodate. User and system databases require different backup strategies.

DETERMINE BEST LOCATION TO STORE BACKUPS
In larger server environments, performance and security can be improved by correct location of SQL server data, log, and backup files. This also includes selection of the most appropriate media.

DISASTER RECOVERY PLANNING
Work with the client to create a robust disaster recovery plan. It is important to understand the criticality of the data to the business and determine the tolerance for loss. Balancing these plans against cost and performance of the database can be a tricky line to walk and we will help guide customers through this process.

DATABASE OPTIMIZATIONS
Modern database are very robust, but for optimal performance they must be tuned on a regular basis. Tuning requires indexes be monitored and working with developers to create optimal execution plans. Settings for databases will be determined and set. These settings include auto sizing and shrinking and setting grow rates to name a couple.

MONITORING
We will setup up jobs and alerts to proactively monitor the database and email or page warnings when key items are approaching or exceeding predetermined performance thresholds. We can also setup an alerting system for critical errors. Part of monitoring is to establish daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly maintenance routines. It is important the database be proactively monitored to head of any potentially serious system problems.
